41. 帰路 / Returning

バルカン半島の旅 No21 (最終回).　｢帰路」

オスロにて
8月末の夜遅く、おれたちはオスロのアパートにたどり着いた。
約3ヶ月ぶりのオスロ。

ノルウェー人のペーターは久しぶりの故郷に戻って幸せそうだった。
ボスニア人のベキムは今までになく深く故郷のバルカン半島を旅したので、”生活の場” オスロに戻ってきて寂しそうだった。

｢もう以前のおれには戻れないさ。今のバルカンを生きている連中と深くつながれたし、この旅はおれを強くしてくれたんだ」
疲れた口調のベキム。

｢結局黒海にはたどり着けなかったけど、そんな事はどうでもよくなったんだ。過程そのものが重要だったんだ」
とペーター。

先へ先へと急いでばかりいた頃と比べてなんて変わりようだろう。

こうして、ベキムとペーターは「生活」に舞い戻った。


そしておれも彼らへの最後のインタビューを終え、カメラを置いて泥のように眠った。


帰路

８月6日。スメデレボから更にドナウ川を下ると小さな島が見えてきた。

｢‥あの島で引き返そう」
とベキム。

そこがおれたちの旅の折り返し地点となった。

少し前からベキムは「黒海はあきらめよう」と言ってきていたのだ。

学生のペーターは大学の新学期が始まるから仕方ない。
そして、最初はこの旅を続けるために仕事を辞めると言っていたベキムも、最終的に仕事を選んだ。
そりゃそうだ。仕事を捨ててしまったら その後の生活に支障が出るのだから。

おれは引き返す事に同意して、最終目標だった黒海到達をあきらめる事にした。

最初の予定どおり進めばきっとたどり着けたのだろうけど、おれたちはあまりに寄り道しすぎたのだ。


おれたちはドナウ川を上りはじめ、帰路についた。

ベオグラード、シャバツ、ミトロビツァ、ブチコ、サラエボ、そしてリエカ。
おれたちは今まで寄った街を再び訪ねながら３週間かけて帰路についた。

戻る先々でみんなに旅のエピソードをせがまれながらオスロに戻ってきた。

 
エピローグ
ベキムのアイデンティティ探し。
黒海まで船で横断すること。

結局おれたちはこの旅の二つの目標を両方とも達成できなかった。

｢アイデンティティ」って何なのか、結局おれもベキムも分からず仕舞いだった。

おれたちは、それを探求するには怠け者過ぎたのかも知れない。

とにかく、2006年の夏はおれたち3人にとって「何か」だった。

今おれはこの旅の映像の編集を通して、その「何か」を掘り起こそうとしている。

 

そして、ベキムはオスロでの仕事を最終的に辞めておれと”何か”を始めることを選んだ。

あの「バルカン半島の旅」は ”何か” のスタート地点になった。

つらつら長ったらしく続いた｢バルカン半島の旅」は、とりあえずこれで終わります。


さんきゅー。いえい。




Balkans Travel Chapter 21. "Returning"
Returning

On 6th August.

One small island appeared in the Danube.

"Let's make turn at that island, huh?"
Bekim said.

Then we took the way to go back.

Since few days before, Bekim was suggesting to give up to reach to the Black sea.

No choice. Petter should go back to the university in Oslo.
And Bekim also choose to go back to Oslo. Even though he was thinking to quit his job for this travel.
I understood. It's important to keep your job whatever.

So I agreed to go back and to give up to reach the Black Sea.

We took the way to return to Oslo.

The end of August, We reached to their apartment in Oslo again.

A Norwegian boy Petter seemed happy to come back to his home country.
A Bosnian guy Bekim seemed sad to left his home land the Balkans.

"This travel changed me forever. It made me stronger than before"
Bekim said.

"Eventually, we couldn't reach to the Black Sea. But getting the goal is not point for our travel. The process itself was important"
Petter said.

How he has been changed!  At the beginning, he was always rushed to move to next destinations.

Somehow, they came back to their "Daily life"

I shot the final interview to them. And I fell in sleep like a baby.


Epilogue
That's how, eventually we couldn't get two of our object.

one was to get the Black Sea.
another one was to find out Bekim's identity.

We were too lazy to get them.

But, somehow that summer in 2006 was " Something" for three of us.


Now, eventually Bekim quit his job in Oslo.
And choose to do something with me.

That's how That travel becames the beginning of our friendship.

40. Last Destination / Smederevo

バルカン半島の旅 No20. ｢最後の街 —スメデレボ—」

船旅慕情

小さな船がおれたちをどこかへ運んでくれる。

その何畳かのスペースがおれたちの城。

飯を作る、 喰う、 飲む、 昼寝する、洗濯をする、 YOGAをする、 散髪をする、 歌う。

そして時には小さな喧嘩をする。

暑くなったらエンジンを止めて川に飛び込む。

川に浮かぶ島で野宿をする。


車で走ればアッという間の距離を、ゆっくり進む船旅。

次第に1kmが10kmになり 10kmが100kmになり 100kmが1000kmになってゆく。

世界はだんだん広くなってゆく。

 

ジャングル、村々、釣り人、工場、大都市‥　｢船旅劇場」では色んな舞台や出演者たちが現れては消えてゆく。


時には鏡のように穏やかで、時にはけたたましく荒ぶれる、その川だけがおれたちの旅の全てを見つめていた。

最後の街 —スメデレボ—

ベオグラードからドナウ川を5, 60kmほど下ると、右の岸に大きな城塞跡が見えてきた。
この城塞は、中世セルビア王国がオスマン帝国に最後まで抵抗したスメデレボの城塞。
1459年にこの城塞が陥落してセルビア王国は滅び、長いオスマン時代が始まった。
って、んな事は旅が終わったあとに本で読んで知ったのだけど、この時はそんな事は一切知らずにおれたちはこの城塞の脇に船を停めた。

城壁の上には大きなコウノトリが２羽、巣を作っていた。

この町で最後の仲間、ナディムが合流した。
ナディムはボスニア南部・ヘルツェゴビナからノルウェー難民移住したベキムたちの古い友人。おれが6月に日本からオスロに到着した当日に一緒にパーティーをした仲間だった。

日が暮れてボートの中でまったりしていると、ドコドコと激しい音楽が聞こえてきた。
城塞の中でトランス・パーティーが行われていたのだ。

500年前に激しい戦があったこの城塞は、今では若者たちの遊び場になっていた。
おれとナディムは城塞の中に入ってパーティーに参加した。
パーティーは朝まで続いた。

ベキムとペーターはこのトランスパーティーを楽しみにしていたのに、結局二人ともボートの中で一晩中眠っていた。
長い旅でさすがに二人とも疲れが溜まっていたのだ。

翌日、おれたちはスメデレボを出発してさらに川を下りはじめた。
でも結局この街がこの旅での最後の街となった。

いよいよ次回は｢バルカン半島の旅」最終回！　
って、去年の夏の話を書くのにいつまでかかってんだ！って話だけど‥

Balkans Travel Chapter 20. "The last destination / Smederevo"

For River travel

The small boat brings us to somewhere else.

This tiny space becomes our own castle.

Cooking, Eating, Drinking, Napping, Washing, Cutting hair, Singing...

And sometime having small fights.

When it gets hot, just jump into the river for chilling.

Sleeping on the islands in the river.

Keep on going slow and easy. Never be rushed.

Gradually, 1km becomes 10km, 10km becomes 100km, 100km becomes 1000km.

The world expands little by little.


Jungles, Villages, Fishermen, Factories, Big city...

They come, and they go.


Sometimes calm like a mirror, sometimes wild like an ocean.

Just the river was watching all of our travel.

The Last Destination / Smederevo

The Big Fortress appeared at right side of the Danube.

When the Ottoman came to subdue at the Middle age, this Serbian kingdom fortress was the last one which fought with them to the end.
After this fortress was occupied at 1459, long Ottoman period stated.

Anyway we parked our boat by the fortress.
Two big storks (the bird which brings baby) had a nest on the fortress.

Last company Nedim joined us at this town.
Nedim is old friend of Bekim and Petter. And also refugee from Hercegovina to Norway.

At night, there was a trance party in the fortress.
500 years ago big fight was happened here, but today it has turned to be a party place.
Nedim and me joined this party. The party continued until morning.

Bekim and Petter were looking forward to join this party.
But eventually they were sleeping in the boat whole night.
No choice, we were tired by the long travel.

Next day, we left Smederevo and kept on going down the river Danube.
But eventually Smederevo became final destination in this travel.

And next chapter will be final chapter of "Balkans travel".

39. Chetnik Island / Danube

バルカン半島の旅 No1９. ｢チェトニック・アイランド」8月3日〜
ドナウの洗礼
 
ベオグラードでサバ川は終わり、ドナウ川に合流する。
おれたちの船旅もいよいよドナウ川に舞台が移りました。

ドナウ川に入ると川幅は1km以上に広がり、それまで波ひとつなく鏡のようだったサバ川とはうって変わって、おれたちはいきなり日本海のような高波に襲われた(ちと大げさだけどサバ川からくるとそう感じました）。
船は激しく揺れ、時には波に跳ねて船が川から浮いてるんじゃないかと感じるほどだった。

さらに最初の日にビーチに停泊してた時には嵐に襲われ、危うく船を流されそうにもなった。
おれたちはさっそくドナウの洗礼を受けて、「旅」が「冒険」になっていくのを感じた。

そして更なる冒険がおれたちを待っていた！
なんつって。

チェトニック・アイランド ~ 21世紀のハックルベリーの冒険~
ドナウ川には幾つも島が浮かんでいる。
しばらく下っていくとひと際大きな島が見えてきた。感じいいのビーチに居心地の良さそうなレストランらしきもの。
人が住んでいる島なのだ。

｢ちょっとあそこに寄って行かないか」
おれたちはその島に向けて舵をきった。それが事の始まりだった。

島の中のジャングルを散策すると、古い別荘らしき建物が点在していて快適な空間が広がっていた。
｢ここにおれたちのベオグラード・オフィスを開こう」などと冗談を飛ばしながら、おれたち船から見えたレストランに向かった。

レストランは船から見えた通り、ごきげんな場所だった。
ビーチに出ているテーブルにはおれたちの他に店の仲間らしき若者たち。
おれたちはそこにいたみんなとビールとラキア(バルカンのブランデー）で乾杯！
例によってジャムセッションも始まった。
ドナウ川に沈む夕日を肴に楽しい時間が流れてく。

ところがしばらくするとベキムの様子が変ってきた。

「飯食ったらすぐにこの島をはなれよう」
とおれに耳打ちしてきた。

理由はこうだった。
このレストランの名前はあるセルビアの山の名前からとっているのだけど、かつてそこで激しい戦闘があった事から、現在ではその山はセルビアのナショナリズムを象徴する場所になっているという。
つまりここにいる連中はナショナリスト（民族主義者ー"おれたちサイコー。あいつらFuck" 的な思想を持つ連中）たちだったのだ。

それだけじゃなく、一緒に飲んでいるうちに彼らはスーパー・ハードコア・ナショナリストの殺戮集団、「チェトニック」と呼ばれる兵士たちだった事が明らかになってきた。しかも彼らはその特殊部隊の連中だったのだ。
　　※このレストランのオーナーは有名なリーダーだったみたいで、
　　　 昔のチェトニックのポスターに彼の写真が載っていた。

チェトニックはかつて大量のボスニア人やアルバニア人たちを殺してきた連中。
そしてベキムはボスニア人で、「ベキム」という名前はアルバニア系の名前。
200％最悪な状況だった。さすがのベキムも逃げ出したくなっていたのが伝わってきた。
そりゃそうだ、かつての天敵のど真ん中にいるのだから。

「おれはかつてナイフで仕事をしていたんだ」
痩せたおじさんが、つぶやいた。
つまり銃などではなく、ナイフで人を殺してきたのだという事だ。

ここのオーナーや年配の連中は今でも現役の戦争犯罪者たちで、出るところに出れば刑務所に入らなければならない連中なのだ。

セルビアに来てから出会った連中に90年代の戦争の事を尋ねると、「あれは気が狂った連中がやったことさ」とみんな答えていた。

そして今やおれたちはその「気か狂った連中」に囲まれて酒を一緒に飲んでいたのだ。

でもその事を除けば彼らは全く人のいい連中で、パッと見るとかつての敵同士が一緒に飲んでいるとは誰も気づかないだろう。

でもそれが逆に凄まじく見えて、おれは酔ってもずっと緊張感が耐えなかった。ましてやベキムの心境は計り知れなかった。

でも、結局おれたちはここに2泊して彼らとラキアを飲み続けた。かれらをおれたちのボートに招待したりもした。
仕舞いには若い連中はすっかりベキムの事を好きになっていた、いつもの街と同じように。
その様子を見ていて、破天荒だけどベキムの器のでかさを改めて感じた。

三日目の早朝、
｢今すぐここを離れよう」とベキム。
おれたちはエンジンを回して、逃げるように「チェトニック・アイランド」を去った。
さすがのベキムもぎりぎりまで頑張っていたのだ。

この船旅のアイデアは、川に浮かぶ島を拠点に冒険が展開していく「ハックルベリーフィンの冒険」が元になっているんだけど、なんだか本当にドナウ川がミシシッピに見えてきたぜ。


Balkans Travel Chapter 19. "the Chetnik Island"  3rd Aug -

Greeting from Danube

The river Sava meets the Danube at Beograd.
Our travel also got on to the Danube.

From the Danube, the width of the river gets more than 1km. And immediately we got big waves. Sometimes our boat jumped by the waves. Much different from the Sava. The Sava had no wave like a mirror.

Then when we parked one beach. The big storm attacked us, she was almost going to take away our boat.
We felt our "travel" was going to turn to "Adventure".

And, here we got one more adventure .

The Chetniks island -Huckleberry Finn@21century-
There are many small islands on the Danube.
After while, we found one big island with nice beach. Also we could see one comfortable restaurant. Wao, people lives there.

"Let's check out this island!"
That was the beginning of the Adventure.

The restaurant was nice same as we saw from boat.
We drank Rakia with people from the restaurant.
Then we start to play music as usual.
Beautiful sunset at Danube. happy moment..

But,
"I want leave this island"
suddenly Bekim whispered.

His reason was like this.
The name of the restaurant, they took it from one mountain in Serbia. Big fight happened at this mountain long time ago. So today this place become a symbol of Nationalism.
That means all of people from this restaurant, they are the nationalists.
Not only that, we discovered that they were the "The Chetniks" - the army of super hard core nationalist's  group in Serbia.
They were special team of Chetniks.

The Chetniks used to kill a lot of Bosnians and Albanians.
And Bekim is Bosnian, and his name is from Albania..
200% the worst situation.
Full of ex.his enemies surround us.

"I used to work with knife"
One old guy said to me.
That means he killed people by the knife.
Some of them are still the war criminals.

Since I arrived Serbia, I always asked about the war to the people.
All of them said," Crazy people did war"
So they were the "crazy people". We were drinking with the crazy people.

Slowly I began to understand the situation.
So I couldn't relax so much. But how about Bekim? I can't imagine his situation.
But eventually we stayed this island for 2 days. And young people become to like about Bekim as usual.
He is the big guy as a person.


"Let's go away now!"
Bekim said at the early morning on 3rd day.
we started our engine and left.

Our boat travel, this idea comes from "The Adventure of Huckleberry Finn".
And actually our travel has turned to adventure like Huckleberry.
I saw the Danube turned to Mississippi.

38. Out of Time / Stari Grad

春の嵐
クロアチアで最も日照時間の長いフバール島に激しい雨が降り続いた。
それまでの快晴に反撃とばかりの雨。
それはそれで良し。打ちつける雨の音が聞きにテントのカフェでコーヒーを飲むぜ。

10日ほど経ったある夕方、雨が止んで町が夕日の赤色に染まった。
通りには何はなくとも人々の姿。
言葉を交わさなくてもみんなが雨の終わりを喜んでいるのが伝わってくる。

空を見上げると、スタリグラッドの空に初めてツバメが飛んでいた。
この激しいユーゴ（南風）の中、遥かアフリカから旅してきたのだろうか。

この嵐のあといよいよ本格的な春が始まり、ここに来て４ヶ月、ひとつの季節が終わったのを感じました。

より道

久しぶりの快晴。
部屋の中でじっと編集しているのはとても無理。
カメラを担いで散歩に出るぜ。
春を拾いあつめるぜ！ってな感じで。

雨の後の山間の村にはこんこんと溝に水が流れるので、その流れを撮影したくて3kmほど先の村を目指す。
でもなかなかたどり着けない。
道ばたに咲く花々、そこに群がる蝶々、ハチ、花のベッドで交尾する蟲たち。
おれだけじゃなく、全ての生命が春の到来にわくわくしている。

おれはいちいち立ち止まって かれらを撮影していたので、3km先の村に行くのに4時間もかかってしまった。

「時間を外してくれる時間」が流れるぜ。

 

　　　　　　　　　The Storm of Spring

We had a long and hard rain here in Hvar island where is most sunniest place in whole Croataia.
I liked it as well. In afternoon, everyday I hang out to the cafe to listen the sound of the rain.

After 10 days, the rain had stopped. And the town dyed with red color of evening.
I could see all the people were happy to hang out.

When I looked up, I found out the swallows flied in the sky of Stari Grad.
They might travel from South in this heavy Yugo (South wind).
I respect them.

After the storm, spring has come.
4 month passed since i arrived here.
And I saw one season had finished.

Out of time -Picking up the pieces of Spring-

Sunny!

It's impossible to stick with laptop in the room.
I went out with my camera to pick up the pieces of Spring.

After the rain, the beautiful streams always appear among the village in the mountain.
So I headed to the village where is located 3km from Stari Grad.

On the way, there were many flowers, butterflies, bees and the insects were making love on the bed of flowers.
Not only me, but also all the life were exciting to the Spring.

Every time I stopped and filmed them.
Eventually it took 4 hours to get the village.

Those time is the out of time. That's what I learn from this island.
